VolkerRail trials Renset PS5000 during night-time tram track works
VolkerRail used the Renset PS5000, supplied by Steve Vick International, to power breakers and grinders during tram track replacement in residential and pedestrianised areas.
Steve Vick International has published a case study on a trial with VolkerRail, which used the Renset PS5000 during tram track replacement works in busy residential and pedestrianised areas.
The challenge
The works involved removing worn-out track, breaking out concrete, grinding rails, removing rubber from rails and drilling. Work continued around the clock, which made noise a central concern, especially at night.
Petrol and diesel generators keep running when tools are idle, so they make engine noise throughout a shift. They also produce exhaust fumes and require precautions for fuel handling and possible spills. VolkerRail was looking for a power supply that met its operational needs with less impact on the people living and walking nearby.
The trial
VolkerRail used the 110 V version of the Renset PS5000, supplied by Steve Vick International. According to the case study:
- Two Hilti TE-80 breakers (1.7 kW each) ran continuously for about three hours on fully charged batteries. Night-time preparatory works typically have a three-hour window, so this covered the full period.
- A Makita 9-inch grinder (2.0 kW) ran for an hour, and a Bosch multi-tool also worked without issues.
- With no engine running, the power supply was virtually silent whenever the tools stopped.
- No fuel was needed, which removed refuelling, exhaust fumes and the spill mats normally placed under generators.
- The unit produced zero CO₂ and NOx emissions at the point of use.
VolkerRail also noted how easy the unit was to use, with push-button start and indicator lights showing battery status and when recharging was needed.
About the PS5000
The Renset PS5000 is a portable battery power station that replaces petrol and diesel generators on construction, rail and utility sites. It delivers 5,000 W continuously, with peaks up to 10,000 W, and its swappable LiFePO4 battery modules can be exchanged on site. More information is available at renset.nl/ps5000.
